TAKEAWAYS – Life Lessons Learned explores learning from the wisdom of others.

Happy New Year! We are back on site at the Southern Nevada NAIOP January Program. The title was Past Presidents – High Powered Commercial Real Estate Executives Talking About the Market.

Shawn Danoski and I sat down to discuss our Takeaways from this program. Shawn is the 2019 NAIOP Southern Nevada Chapter President and CEO of DC Building Group, a leading general contracting firm in Las Vegas, NV.

The moderator was Julie Cleaver, Vice President, Land Planning & Design with The Howard Hughes Corporation.

The panelists included:

Jay Heller – Principal with Heller Companies – Active developer of small bay industrial product

Mike Mixer, SIOR – Executive Managing Director with Colliers International Las Vegas – Broker of the largest commercial firm in the market

Mike Shohet – Chief Real Estate Development Officer with Nevada Hand – Developer of affordable housing

This was the NAIOP debut for Julie and the consensus from the audience is we want more! Julie opened the program with an update on the $100 million baseball stadium being built in Downtown Summerlin. From there she asked panelists about their businesses, personal involvement in NAIOP, and so much more!

What were some of our Takeaways?

• What is Southern Nevada doing about the shortage of affordable housing?
• Rumors like is Steve Wynn snooping around to get back in the market?
• How is the Howard Hughes Corp thinking about their master plan to someday include autonomous vehicles?

Takeaways – Life. Lessons. Learned. explores learning from the wisdom of others.

It’s that time of year where we get to reflect and account for the year’s activities and results. When I set out to start the Takeaways Podcast I did not imagine some of the twists and turns we’d take. After twelve months and 20 episodes I am proud of what we’ve accomplished. There were many things we said we would do that we did. And there were things that we didn’t get to.

With me on this episode to recap Season 1 is  Reed Gottesman, Vice President Regional Director of Leasing at Harsch Investment Properties. Anyone who knows Reed knows that he has the unique ability to really see people. I call him a human profiler. Reed generously took the time to hear back every episode to prepare for this podcast. We turned the table and Reed was the one asking the questions. There is a lot of texture and nuance that we explored in this conversation. Reed got me to share more about my experience as a podcaster this year, how I focused on process vs. perfection, and even adversity from my past that I don’t usually talk about. We ended the show with thoughts and ideas of what to expect from Season 2 of Takeaways!

Here are just a few of the Takeaways that we discussed on this episode.

  • What were the influences that caused me to start the Takeaways podcast?
  • Takeaways of Takeaways – How has the podcast evolved? How have I evolved as a person and ‘interviewer’?
  • What were the Takeaways of each episode?

The Southern Nevada Economy

This year marks a DLI (Developing Leaders Institute) milestone for NAIOP Southern Nevada. It is our 10th Anniversary since the inaugural class graduated. We plan to host an event honoring all our alumni this summer with Chairman Greg Fuller attending as our special guest.

Currently we are busy planning for the 2020 class that is set to commence this September. We held our kickoff meeting in January where we divided the committee into subcommittees to focus on refining the class curriculum and class project. The committee plans to distribute the application for the 2020 candidates March 15, 2019.

If you know of an aspiring leader in CRE and think they would be a great fit for the DLI program, please send your candidate referrals to the Committee Chair, Sabrina Borghoff or NAIOP Southern Nevada 702-798-7194 | info@credasnv.org for more information.

NAIOP Southern Nevada Chapter extends our deepest sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Chuck Witters who passed away on Christmas day, 2018. Chuck was an active member and leader in our association since arriving in Las Vegas in 1993. He served on the Board of Directors from 1997 – 2005, dedicated countless hours to numerous committees, was awarded 1995 Associate of the Year and earned Office Broker of the Year five years running from 1999 through 2004. Chuck cared deeply for the success of the Chapter, consistently striving to ensure that member needs were met. Even after retiring, he was a frequent guest at NAIOP events.

Don’t delay!  The Spotlight Awards final submissions are due this Friday, January 11th. This includes property submissions and all industry nominations.  This is a hard deadline, no extensions.  Questions? Contact either:

Happy New Year to all!

To keep the spirit of giving, in December the committee rallied together purchasing beanies, gloves, bags, emergency blankets, hand/foot warmers, snacks and supplies for 200 care packages for the poor and homeless.  They helped Catholic Workers Las Vegas serving breakfast at 6 am on a bitter cold morning and handed the care packages out afterwards.

Thank you again for everyone’s time and donations in completing Phase 1 of the St. Jude’s Cottage Renovation. We raised a total of $50K and donated 720 volunteer hours towards the project. Thanks again to Colliers Links for Life and Martin Harris Construction for your gracious donations.

HERE WE GO!  We are gearing up to begin Phase 2 starting around the beginning of April. We’ll be posting details soon, but in the meantime, please start us off on the right foot by donating in 2019. Don’t have half a heart…we want a big heart Click here to donate today!

As Nevada’s leading commercial real estate and development association, NAIOP Southern Nevada has set a standard for membership, participation, and referrals between members and their companies. Among the top commercial real estate organizations in Las Vegas, NAIOP has the largest membership, highest attendance records and raises the most money for charity year after year. That is something to be extremely proud of!

In 2018, membership grew to more than 550 members and the local Chapter raised almost $500,000 from events and sponsorships. The chapter hosted nineteen different programs ranging from breakfast panels with local and regional experts, real estate and development educational workshops, industry tours, projections on current and future markets to special events such as bowling for a cause and the much anticipated annual bus tour. The Chapter’s ability to create, nurture and host events is second to none. With a reach of more than 1,500 people, the Chapter left a memorable impression on the market this past year.

In what other ways has NAIOP made a mark? Our commitment to volunteering and social outreach has beneficially impacted hundreds of lives throughout the valley. The organization’s presence on social media and commitment to local charity events has set a new standard for corporate responsibility. Through 11 different committees, 250 social media posts, 50+ media mentions, 170+ committee members, and countless meetings; the group has been able to make a difference locally, regionally and even on a national scale.

Most people join an organization to create more business, grow their network, or market themselves and their companies, but NAIOP Southern Nevada successfully gives those reasons substance. As the 12th largest Chapter in the nation and 5th in growth, we have much to celebrate, but the Chapter isn’t stopping there. With 2019 President, Shawn Danoski at the helm, the goal for 2019 is nothing less than a record-breaking growth of increasing membership to 600+ members, along with a continuing increase in Chapter revenue.

When setting your goals for 2019, consider making NAIOP a priority. If you’re not yet a member, join. If you’re already a member, take some next steps by attending more events and even volunteering on a committee. If you’re interested in taking your involvement to the next level, join NAIOP Corporate. Make the most of your membership by getting more involved and you’ll gain valuable insights and connections. NAIOP Works. Get Involved.
