The NAIOP Southern Nevada Golf Tournament planning is underway! The 29th Annual “Around the World in 18 Holes”  Golf Tournament will be held at Spanish Trail Country Club on Friday, October 8th, 2021. Sponsorships are selling fast and player registrations are currently only available with the purchase of a sponsorship. See details here.

Community Service Committee Update – July 2021

Despite the closures that the Pandemic brought, the NAIOP Southern Nevada’s Community Service Committee went above and beyond to ensure the local groups that they partner with were served.

Throughout March and April, the Committee members participated in Make-A-Wish Walk for Wishes with a 2021 Virtual Fundraising Campaign challenge called, “What will you do for a Make-A-Wish donation?” Our committee members got creative with fun and entertaining challenges of their own. Members pledged to complete their challenges for each donation goal met. The group exceeded their fundraising goal of $5,000 collecting over $12,000 in donations!  The generous donations to Make-A-Wish of Southern Nevada create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses within our own community. During May, the Committee held a donation drive for Street Teens, a local non-profit organization dedicated to assisting homeless youth.  Donations included food, water, personal hygiene products, paper products, etc. These donations help provide support to the at-risk youth and empower them to strive towards a bright future.

As we head into summer, we are gearing up to kick-off our 2nd Annual Communities in Schools college application fee fundraiser. Details are here.  Watch for our school supply drive for Hollingsworth Elementary School soon.  Keep an eye out for both of these events on your email and our social media.

Clark County Community Survey

Clark County has a new community survey being conducted to support two county initiatives.  The research and subsequent data from the survey will inform Clark County’s visioning for the future and Clark County’s messaging for economic development.  The survey is anonymous and does not require residents to disclose their name or specific address.  All data and information from the survey will be aggregated to understand general perceptions and views of the county.

The survey should take no more than 15-20 minutes to complete and it will be available until July 19th.  The survey can be accessed online by visiting www.BrandingClarkCounty.com.

Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts.  Also, please share the survey with others that may want to provide feedback about our community.

NV Energy Survey: New Construction Customer Experience Assessment and Feedback

In order to evaluate changes and improvements, the first step is to survey our customers. We would appreciate your genuine and candid feedback about our performance and the issues that you feel are important.

The survey asks a few pointed questions about each stage of the project lifecycle: initiation (New Development Center), design, inspection, construction, meter sets and the new construction portal.

Member Highlight – Terry Resch, Cox Business

Where are you originally from? I moved to Vegas in 2014 for Cox Business. I was working for the Cable Provider of Minneapolis/St. Paul. I was that crazy lady still wearing shorts all year the first year I was here. I didn’t need a winter jacket coming from one of the coldest states that Minnesota is.

What has NAIOP provided you that has helped you grow professionally or personally? The connections to the people working on the same growth for Southern Nevada that I am working every day. NAIOP educates me on the importance of building and growing our region. NAIOP is a valuable education every time I am engaged.

What has been your favorite experience?  My 1st members only event was the mixer at Stoney’s Country Club with line dancing. There I met the future President at the time, Dave Strickland. He introduced me to the people in the room. People were so welcoming and caring. It was there, that I knew NAIOP was my people and that membership was going to be a valuable part of my exploration of the business of southern Nevada.

Who have I met or become closer friends with at NAIOP: It’s not fair to name one person. I will say the Membership and Communications Committees has opened the door to new friendships and relationships. That’s really where the magic happens. I would tell anyone that thinks I don’t have time or can’t commit to try it. It’s the time to get close and create those bonds. You also learn so much. Everyone is there to support NAIOP and each other.

What do you want your legacy to be in the Southern Nevada community? I’m so glad Cox Business and Terry Resch was there to help us on our project. Cox Business and their technology offerings complete any project. Together, we can do great things.

Where are you originally from?  I’m born and raised in Las Vegas!

What has NAIOP provided you that has helped you grow professionally or personally? NAIOP has provided me with an extensive networking foundation that I have been able to leverage in all my development activities. Not only have I found amazing project talent, but I have found a handful of supportive friends.

What has been your favorite experience? Serving with the NAIOP community service committee for the Catholic Workers event in 2019. It was freezing cold and a core group of us showed up to distribute care packages and serve food to the homeless. It was a heart-warming moment. Especially the homeless guy who wanted to be in all our photos.

Who have I met or become closer friends with at NAIOP: Wendi Schweigart from NDL Group. We met at the Shelby Museum tour while signing the wall. It was a rather comical moment, and we became fast friends. I admire her motivation to start a non-profit in memory of her mother, while maintain a career and family.

What do you want your legacy to be in the Southern Nevada community? I want to leave this world better than it was when I entered it. I am passionate about creating communities that resonate with who I am, eco-friendly, community and service oriented and health conscious.

The Right Brain – July 2021

Reminds me of when I was a kid.  If my parents discovered something broken or missing around the house, they’d sometimes line up my brothers and me against the wall and say, “Who did this?  Just tell the truth and we won’t be mad!” — which, as I recall, was often followed by a spanking if I fessed up.

In contrast to my sometimes less-than-honest youthful mischief, good, honest people make honest mistakes.  If they fear retribution, it will breed a culture that discourages risk-taking, stifles innovation, and causes people to hide their mistakes rather than learn from them.  Wise leaders create an environment of trust so that creative people won’t be afraid to take risks or think outside the box.

Making (and learning from) mistakes is necessary for growth.  Adapting the famous quote from Danish mathematician and inventor Piet Hein: The secret to excellence?  Well it’s plain and simple to express: err and err and err again but less and less and less!
